Live Challenge Agenda

Disrupt Greece’s all-day live event on June 29 includes a series of discussion panels and one-to-one interviews with personalities from the business, institutional and investment sectors in Greece and abroad. Fintech, agribusiness, tourism, new finance tools for startups and small- and medium-sized enterprises, and true stories told by representatives of the Greek ecosystem of startup entrepreneurship are some of the topics to be discussed.

The list of keynote speakers includes Christos Tsolkas, Vice President Sales at Philip Morris International, Jeff Hoffman, investor and co-founder of, among others, and, and the Greek investor of Snapchat, Niko Bonatsos, Managing Director of General Catalyst. At the same time, the finalist teams of the competition that scored the highest rating during the evaluation of their proposals will present their business ideas live, in front of a dynamic audience, competing for access to services worth EUR 100,000 in total.

New Financial Tools - Equifund

In the coming months, the Equifund superfund is expected to start financing innovative Greek companies. Created jointly with the European Investment Fund (EIF), the new investment platform has already committed more than EUR 320 million for this purpose, while the names of its 12 sub-fund managers will have been announced by September. These are purely private investment schemes, many of which come from the banking sector, which means that they have experience in both the selection of financing and the leveraging of capital. Through the two ‘windows’ of general entrepreneurship, businesses in various sectors (tourism, energy, agri-food, environment, supply chain) and in various stages of development will be funded, with special priority being given – through the innovation ‘window’ – to linking research activities and production.

Fintech disrupts the global banking market. The industry, which in 2016 alone managed to raise funds in excess of $36 billion, is emerging as one of the hottest sectors, with more and more financial institutions considering synergies with companies that are active there. According to PwC, the majority of global banks, insurance companies and investment managers intend to strengthen partnerships with Fintech over the next five years, expecting an average return of 20% on investment in innovation projects. A key factor, which urges banks and Fintech to join forces, is the fear of the former that revenue is at risk due to the activities of the latter. In particular, 88% of bankers consider Fintech a real threat, as opposed to 83% in 2016. In Greece, the Fintech sector has significant growth prospects and could increase its degree of market penetration.

The sector of agriculture is in transition, driven by the impact of technological progress in reducing production costs and improving the quality of agricultural products. At the same time, the young farmer who cultivates land is becoming a businessperson – farmer, while terms such as ‘agribusiness’ and ‘precision farming’ are used to describe this new production framework. Also, large companies as well as startups radically change the agenda of agriculture thanks to technology and new financing programs.

Tourism and digital tools

Technology is providing an additional boost to tourism, a sector of the Greek economy that has been performing strongly despite the eight-year economic crisis. Last year, more than 27.5 million tourists chose Greece to spend their holidays, while data on this year’s pre-bookings show that this will be another record-setting year. Digital tools enable all domestic tourism businesses to increase their profitability and, thus, their competitiveness, while government revenue stands to benefit as well. The prospects of tourism, its contribution to the Greek economy, and the new model of the ‘digital traveller’.

Startups Ecosystem

The businesspeople who appear in this year’s 40 under 40 list, compiled by Fortune magazine, contradict the statistics that show that just one out of 10 startups succeeds. Besides, many of these individuals have been pioneers of the domestic startup scene, daring to set up their own business in an environment that is almost hostile for entrepreneurship. With new ideas and a lot of talent, they aspire to ‘disrupt’ Greek business. They are self-made, innovative, extrovert, but also executives of large enterprises, and come from almost all sectors of the economy, such as technology, catering, tourism, agriculture, energy, etc. They stood out thanks to their vision, faith and perseverance, and all share a common characteristic: They are determined to succeed. Are you ready to be inspired?
